Campo del Cielo

Meteorites

  • The site was first discovered by the Spanish in 1576 in the Gran Chaco Gualamba region of Argentina.
  • Radio carbon dating of chared wood from the craters, combined with the oral history of the indigenous people, place dates on the meteorites between 4000 and 6000 years.
  • These meteorites are approximately 92% iron, but also contain small amounts of nickel, cobalt, phosphorus, gallium, germanium, and iridium.
